Be a leader.]] - [[We don't need heroes. We need radical interdependence. We need each other.]] - Have ambitious goals that cannot be achieve by a single person. Invite co-creation and collaboration. Make things better together. - Meetings are precious, not mindless calendar fillers. Curate meetings that enable everyone to be themselves and to express themselves. - [[Interdependence is a lot harder than being a hero]]. But interdependence is what we need to solve the complex interconnected problems we have. ## Notes ### Ineffectiveness of heroic leadership - "I wanted to be a hero. A hero selling chips and biscuits in a pink suit. What happened after that speech? **Nothing. All of that applause did not lead to action. Nothing changed.**" - "No one knew what they were suppose to do, and most importantly, **they didn't know that I needed them**". - "The idea that one person has the answer is ludicrous. It's not only ineffective, it's dangerous. Because it leads us to believe that **it's been solved by that hero, and we have no role**." - [[We don't need heroes. We need radical interdependence. We need each other.]]. - A single person can influence change, but they cannot change everything by themselves. - [[Don't be a hero. Be a leader.]] - "Heroes see everyone as a competitor or a follower." They don't want input. They want control and credit. - The idea of being untouchable for heroic minded leaders is an illusion. ### Setting goals - "A hero sets a goal that can be individually delivered and neatly measured." - "Interdependent leaders start with a goal that's really important, but is actually impossible to achieve by one company or one person alone." - Interdependent leaders announce goals without a clear path to achieving them. The announcements are an "invitation for co-creation, and sometimes, they're a call for help." ### Interdependence - Recognize and respect the people and things you are interconnected with. The materials and services you use to make things. Then the consequences of the things and decisions you've made - both intended and unintended. An interconnected series of streams of impact that keeps on flowing. - "True collaboration is possible, but it's subtle and complex." - "Clearly, stopping rhino poaching is a goal way to big for me. So i'm immediately in interdependent land." - "We're now in a complex but inspiring process of learning how to work together." - [[Interdependence is a lot harder than being a hero]] - The world is getting more complex. Filled with complex problems that no one person can solve alone. We need to work together. That is a practice and a mindset that we need to get better at. - Complexity arises from our interconnectedness. The solution isn't to sever our connections, but to improve the relationships of those connections we have - to the people and things that matter to us most. ### Community of companies - (B corp clothing companies). "They don't see their responsibility end when a customer buys their clothes." - "Patagonia encourages you not to buy new clothes from them, and will repair your old clothes for free." - It's one thing to be competitive, but it's another to also be compassionate for the communities you are connected with. - "Once you see a problem like this (e.g. poor labor practices), you can't unsee them. So you have to ask others to help you solve them." - "**We don't compete on human rights.**" - "The day we became a B-Corp, it wasn't just a self-congratulatory moment of a hero company - it was more like a community celebration." ### Meaningful meetings - Meetings are not calendar fillers. They are the most precious things - opportunities for collaboration. - Lead meetings where people lean forward - wondering where they might fit in. - Remove the concept of hierarchy when it comes to collaboration. Create an environment where everyone is comfortable to express themselves and to be themselves. - In a meeting, ask every single person of their opinion. - Fight the urge to embellish. Fight the urge to become a hero. - "Drop people's guards. Cause ideas to spread like wildfire." - Time together is precious and important. People's time is important. Do not dare waste their time or yours. Make the best use of time. Curate the time together to encourage people to bring and be their best selves. ## Original ![[A guide to cooperative leadership-1.jpg]] ![[A guide to cooperative leadership-2.jpg]] ![[A guide to cooperative leadership-3.jpg]] ![[A guide to cooperative leadership-4.jpg]]
