## Notes
### Don't start with details
- Too much detail in the beginning of the process is unhelpful.
- Rather than focusing on the detail of individual parts, try to sketch an idea of what you're trying to make as a whole.
- "A more reckless approach of just getting something down will be your friend."
- Discover and pick frameworks and structures as a means to get started.
- [[It's always easier to start with something over nothing]].
- [[You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.]]
- Develop your ideas [[Outside in]]. Then construct it [[Inside out]].
- Don't spend ages working on the EQ of your hi-hat sound when you haven't written a chorus yet.
### Screwdrivering
> "Don't get lost in the software... The software isn't gonna write the song." - Isobel Waller Bridge (Film, TV, and Theatre composer)
- Brian Eno (musician and producer) describes the process of getting lost in the details as "screwdrivering".
- "I'm always worried when a project gets to the screwdrivering stage."
- [[Getting lost in the details is just a way to comfort yourself when you’re lost in the project]].
- [[Progression comes from the intentional curation of choices]].
- [[Focus on the details without forgetting the whole]].
- [[If the frame is right, details will fall into place.]]
### Sketching
- Lay out a simple "sketch" of the entire piece.
- [[Make a map to navigate the world you’re in or the one you’re building]].
- Sketch out the shape of your idea. Then fill it in.
- Approach the creative process like painting.
### Structure can emerge
> "Structure can emerge from the material itself." - Errollyn Wallen (Composer)
- Forcing rigid structure pre-maturing can also lead to sub-optimal results.
- Rough the shape of your idea. Work through it to discover what it should be.
- [[The best way to understand something is by working through it, not around it]].
- "Like it out not, your piece is gonna have a structure. So you might as well know what it is."
### Big picture
- [[Perfection is the enemy of progress]].
- [[In the pursuit of greatness, do not fail to do good.]]
