## Summary
- Unethical behaviour spreads as collective boundaries of what we believe is right and wrong fades from continuous encouragement and acceptance of subjectively "wrong" things.
- [[Ethical boundaries wither as core values are replaced with compromise]] - losing sight of what matters most.
- "[[We use words to create emotional distance]]".
- The use of words can create an ideological limit for how far people may strive to make things better.
- "[[Every single time, ethical fading happens because of poor leadership, and it can be reversed with good leadership.]]"
## Notes
- [[Ethical fading]] is a phenomenon that people make unethical decisions believing they are within the boundaries of their ethical frameworks.
- Example - Pharmaceutical companies grossly raising prices of their drugs to meet business targets, but making it more difficult for people to receive the cary they need. Not illegal, but kind of unethical.
- [[Ethical boundaries wither as core values are replaced with compromise]] - losing sight of what matters most.
- Ethical fading is a large scale effect of peer pressure, driven by the largely self-serving behaviours of the powerful or influential few.
- Societal ethics fade as we collectively accept the rationalization of largely subjective unethical behaviour.
- "Industry standard" or "everyone's doing it" are examples of rationalization.
- Catchphrases like "industry standard" create an over lowering ceiling for how far people are willing to strive for making things better. They are accepted mantras for the stagnation and the eventual degradation of quality.
- [[Stagnation is the precursor to degradation]].
- [[Ethical fading weaponizes language to weaken the resolve of people]].
- "[[We use words to create emotional distance]]".
- Simply do the best you can. Do what is right by you and what is right by others.
- "[[Every single time, ethical fading happens because of poor leadership, and it can be reversed with good leadership.]]"
- Behaviour that is encouraged, either through incentive or threat, is behaviour that will prosper.
- "[[It's leadership that has to create an environment which trust can thrive]], so too does a leader create an environment in which the opposite of trust thrives."
- Observe the actions of people. Question the actions of leaders.
