[[Notes]] - Topics: [[Productivity]] - People: Chris Schrandt - Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNigLLaFyfo --- ## Summary - "The elimination of [[8 wastes|waste]] is what it's all about". - [[5S]], [[8 wastes|waste identification and elimination]], and other core principles, are not thought of as tools. They are how you do the work. - [[Continuous improvement isn't a particular thing you do. It is part of everything you do.]] - Use [[A3]] as a method to solve problems. - [[Technology is a method, not the result]]. - [[Reliability above all]]. - Automation isn't everything. "People are more flexible than robots". ## Notes ### Waste - "The elimination of waste is what it's all about". - Being able to recognize [[8 wastes]] is very powerful. That's what everything starts. - A [[Value stream mapping]] can be used to uncover wastes. - The culture of [[Built-in quality]] naturally reduces and eliminates the identified wastes. - [[Standardization]] is extremely powerful in solving the problems uncovered from the value streaming method. Standardization is only possible because of [[5S]]. - "Favourite tool? All of them." ### Continuous improvement at Toyota - "At Toyota, I don't ever recall thinking about them (e.g. [[5S]]) as a tool. It's how we did the work. There was always that thinking of how we could do things better." - [[Kaizen]] is built into the culture. - [[Continuous improvement isn't a particular thing you do. It is part of everything you do.]] \ ### Respect for people - [[Respect for people]]. Everyone's opinion matters. - How can I do my job? How can I do my job better? - "You were not only empowered, but you were expected to participate in [[Kaizen|Continuous improvement]]". - Everybody would always have a sensai (a coordinator). ### Learnings (A3) - Learned about [[A3]] problem solving - Use diagrams instead of words. It makes the presentation of the idea easier for anyone to understand it. ### Toyota today - "Technology is secondary. It's a tool. They (Toyota) are not interested in the latest and greatest." - [[Technology is a method, not the result]]. - "Technology needs to support the people, and it needs to be proven before implemented." - [[Reliability above all]]. - Even for advanced technologies like SMED (single-minute exchange of dies), automation isn't everything. - Automation isn't everything. "People are more flexible than robots". ## See also - [[Lean manufacturing]] - [[Toyota Production System]]
