## Notes
### Up the organization
- "[Up the organization](https://www.amazon.ca/Up-Organization-Corporation-Stifling-Strangling/dp/0787987751)", written by Bob Townsend (transformed Avis into a rent-a-car company), was a released in the 1960's and is still influential and relevant today.
- It's a book about leadership and culture building without ego.
- "No, never do an MBA. There's too many managers already! The world is short of leaders. We don't need more managers." - Bob Davids, paraphrasing Bob Townsend.
- Management and leadership is not the same thing.
### Management
- Management is about **control**. It's about working with what you have and ensuring that it degrades as slowly as possible.
- In business, there's this concept of the "triple constraint of management". 3 things, and only 3 things, you can control: Quality, time, and money. "Whichever one of those 3 takes precedence, the other 2 will suffer".
- See [[Project management triangle]] - [[Good, fast, cheap. Choose two]].
- "[[Control is the management, the interplay, of time, quality, and money]]"
### Leadership
- "People fall under leadership."
- [[Don't push - Pull. Lead, and others may follow]].
- Avoid lifetime problems by fixing the foundation early.
- Take your shoes off and jump into the trenches.
- Show, tell, and let go.
- "[[Power comes from people who are leading give you their support]]".
- [[Power compounds because it is shared]].
- [[Integrity is the key to genuine leadership. A rare character trait but without integrity it's misleading that people do.]]
- [[Leaders don't get people to believe in them, they get people to believe in themselves.]]
- "You need to be in touch with the people you lead. You need to be in their shoes."
