Value in exchange for resources. - Reuse what you can. Be mindful of time and of people. - [[It's not being lazy. It's getting the most mileage out of your hard work.]] - Reinvest your resources into your team. Cultivate compounding [[Technical assets]] that give your team more time to make. - Do what you can to save time without compromising impact. ## Notes ### Artists - "Artists are challenged to somehow take being good at making shapes and turn that into money". - Success comes from exercising or exchanging skill for perceived value. - You must understand what other people value and apply your skills to that context. Alternatively, you can create your own context. - "Art is a time consuming process, and you need to eat too" ### Animation - [[Drawing = Time + Money]]. - Traditionally, an animated show takes around two years to make. - There are many **moving parts** within the **animation pipeline** - from storyboarding, to research, to design. - ""...and it's someone's entire job to make sure everyone is doing their job". - To illustrate the amount of time needed for art and design, there was a background that took seven hours to make. It appeared on screen for four seconds. - **"Seven hours of work. Four seconds of content."** - Backgrounds can be a time consuming process and the whole point of them is to be in the back. ### Reuse - (Reusing and re-purposing backgrounds). [[Am I being cheap? Absolutely! That's the point. That gives the background artists more time to make something else.]] - "Instead of having to draw 20 different scenes of a bedroom. We already have a bedroom. Let's just do something else, please!" - [[It's not being lazy. It's getting the most mileage out of your hard work.]] - See [examples of recycled/reused/referenced Disney animations](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuM5EqoK0ME). - "Just because you drew 24 Mowgli's doesn't mean they're going to look good when you play the frames together." - Prioritize your resources to achieve maximum impact. Reuse what you can be mindful of time and of people. Reinvest resources to enable your team to make better together. - Cultivate compounding technical assets. ### Negativity - If you receive negative feedback that you feel is eating you away at you... Figure out what you can do to get it out of your head. [[Don't allow negativity to live in your head completely rent free]]. [[Be water | Empty your mind]]. - [[Negativity may come from a place of ignorance rather than malice]]. - Try to objectively understand where the other person is coming from. [[Meet them where they're at]]. View this as an opportunity to teach others - an opportunity to more deeply understand others as well as to understand yourself. ## Original ![[The truth about making cartoons-1.jpg]] ![[The truth about making cartoons-2.jpg]] ![[The truth about making cartoons-3.jpg]]
