To be honest with your intentions. Precious with less. Be realistic with how ability can scale with production. Recognize effort in addition to output. Opportunity resides in the gap between effort and output. Be quick be cheap, be good, be efficient. Efficiency is the combination of good quick and cheap in their highest forms. Concept art is more like concept design. If you really break it down even more, it's more like idea design. Concept art is the result of IDEA design. Art is not about finality. It is about the expression of an idea or emotion. It's more about making than it is about aesthetics. Art is the unscientific practice of self expression. Concept art is not marketing fluff. Concept art is not meant to be pretty. Beauty is incidental, functional is beautiful. Useful is beautiful, useless is not concept art may not be art at all. They're more like instructions. Concept. Art is basically figuring stuff out. Design is problem solving. Art is expression. Design is problem solving. They both can be subjectively beautiful, but their purposes are different. Any great idea comes great problems. Focus on solving the problem, rather than the medium of the solution. Concept art is making reference for the next guy down the pipeline. Concept art is a cost savings tool. You don't want your animator spending time figuring out how the landing gear works. Your job as a concept artist is to make life easier for the next person. There's no eye-candy is just pencil drawings and it's great. Summary art is expression design is problem solving. Concept art is a result of idea to design and a great idea comes great problems. Your job as a concept artist is to make life easier for the next person. Be quick, be cheap. Be good. Be effective.
