[[Notes]] - Topics: [[Self-understanding]] - People: [[George Carlin]] - Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZGo6mWjk4Y --- ## Summary - Subjectively, the most successful you can be is to live and grow as your [[Authentic self]]. - By swimming against the tide, you are showcasing and expressing ideas that may resonate with others - ideas that they too believe in but are afraid to admit or are unable to articulate. This can lead to objective success. - Always move forward. Walk down a well beaten path to start or if you're lost. When you're ready, blaze your own path guided by your natural spirit - [[Your unshakable truth]]. - Have a dream. Have a vision. But do not be blinded by it. Question it. Refine it. Encourage others to do the same if the vision requires a team. - [[Always be yourself]]. But keep an open mind. You also want to grow. In order to do so, you must observe and absorb some form of feedback from the outside - either from the environment or from others. Otherwise, you will be blinded by yourself (ego) and you will cease to move forward in a manner that integrates you and the world. - Use your power, platform, skills, and talent to **express and share your feelings and ideas**. Don't do it solely to please. But package your message in a manner that has some sort of appeal. Otherwise, it is not accessible nor disable for others, and you will simply be speaking to yourself. By doing so, you are not bending to the will of others. You are extending your hand to invite them into your world. You are extending yourself. ## Notes - "On these shows, I began to realize I didn't fit. I was missing who I was." - George felt disconnected from is career because he didn't feel like he was being his authentic self. And the expression of his **authentic self** was **suppressed or warped** based on the context he was in. He walked in someone else's predefined path and realized it didn't work for him. - "I dreamed a mainstream dream, but **what I really was**, was an outlaw and a rebel because I had lived that kind of life." - "It's important in life if you don't give a shit. It can help you a lot." - "I was one who **swam against the tide** of what is expected and what the establishment wants from us. But I didn't know that about myself. **This dream blinded me**." - Always follow your dream. But don't be blinded by it. Always revisit your vision through the context of reality and the self. - "I realized that these artists are using their talent to project their feelings and ideas, **not just please people**". - "I took 2 years to change, and it happened on television". - "I denied that part of myself and finally, it came to full flower, and I never became a really big success until that." - "I probably had over 200 television appearances by that time, and I still wasn't realized as a writer/comedian. I found out later I was more than just a comedian." ## Original ![[George Carlin on why "it's important not to give a shit"-1.jpg]] ![[George Carlin on why "it's important not to give a shit"-2.jpg]]
