## Notes
- "Captain Swenson was recognized for running **into live fire**, to rescue the wounded and pull out the dead." "Where do people like that come from?"
- "There is **love** there"
- "In the military, they give medals to people whoa re willing to sacrifice themselves to that others may gain. In business, we give bonuses to people who are willing to sacrifice others so that we may gain".
- "It's the **environment**."
- [[If you got the environment right, everyone of use has the capacity to do these remarkable things and more importantly, others have that capacity too]]
- Why did these people do it? [[Because they would have done it for me]]
- There is a **deep sense** of trust and cooperation.
- "The problem with concepts like trust and cooperation is that they are **feelings, they are not instructions**."
- The modern world is full of **uncertainly and danger**. "We have no control over these forces. These are **constant** and they're not going away".
- "The only variables are inside the organization, and that's **where leadership matters**."
- [[Leadership matters most in a controlled environment]]
- "It's the leader that sets the **tone**."
- When the leader prioritizes the safety of the people within, **remarkable** things happen.
- "The reason we like Southwest Airlines... is because **they don't feat their leaders**".
- When we feel safe, we will work together to face the dangers outside the **seize the opportunities**.
- Great leaders want to support their people so that they could achieve more than they could ever had imagined for themselves.
- "If you had hard times in your family, would you ever consider laying off one of your children?" We would never do that. Why then would we lay people off in our organization?
- "This is why people have such a visceral hatred towards banking CEOs' with their disproportionate salaries and bonuses. **It's not the numbers**. It's that they have violated the very definition of leadership. We know they sacrifice other people to protect their own interests."
- [[Great leaders would never sacrifice the people to save the numbers]]. They would sacrifice the numbers to save the people.
- "Bob (CEO) doesn't believe in head count. Bob believes in **heart count**."
- [[It's better that we should all suffer a little than any of us should have to suffer a lot]]
- [[Leadership is a choice. It is not a rank.]]
- "[[We call them leaders because they go first]]. They take the risk before anyone else does."
- Leaders sacrifice themselves so that their people will be safe and protected. In turn, their people will sacrifice themselves so that the leader's vision can be realized.
