- Topics: - [[Strategy]] --- - Strategy, tactics, and time. What is the name or phrase to describe the difference in maneuvers at a tactical level if one had unlimited time? If time was not a factor, would tactics be considered a strategy? - For example, in a [[StarCraft]] to match, one has to react almost instantaneously to what is happening in the world. The micro interactions such as resource management and skirmishes, all to complement the macro strategy of defeating the enemy. - For professional players, they are able to make (near) perfect calculations and maneuvers instantaneously. That could be the mechanical separation between amateurs and professionals. - But what if time was not a factor? What is the game will slow down to 100 or even 1000 times slower? At that point, would prior micro or tactical maneuvers, such as sending a drone together minerals, sending a drone to build a building in a specific location, or sending a squad to do a run by attack, be considered strategy? Interactions which used to take seconds now take hours. How would the implementation (or maneuvers) vary between normal speed and this significantly slower alternate reality? Would there be any actual strategic or technical differences other than mechanical perfection? - By taking time out of the equation, you are then afforded the opportunity to do a much deeper strategic analysis at the tactical level. - Therefore, is time the only or primary factor that determines strategic excellence? I don’t think so. Having more time allows you to refine your maneuvers. However, you must have the abilities of strategy, operations, and tactics to maneuver in the first place. - The best are able to maneuver effectively in real time. They will be able to maneuver even better in slow time. - Amateurs are able to maneuver relatively OK in slow time. However, their lack of skills and experience definitely show in real time. ## See also - [[Think strategically, act tactically.]]
