The **zettelkasten** (German: "slip box") is a method of note-taking and personal knowledge management used in research and study.
Originally, key ideas were written on index files and filed in a cabinet. Each index card would contain one idea expressed in either a sentence or a paragraph, following the rule that it must fit on that single index card. This constraint was effective because it forces ideas to be refined into it's simplest forms – and clarified.
The power of the index cards aren't with the cards themselves, but rather the links in between them.
